Nicaragua Program - Our First Training Hospital in the Western Hemisphere
Sustainable, autonomous training-to-cure hospital programs in Central America, the Caribbean, and South America.
Starting with Nicaragua as a regional showcase…
Between 2008 and 2011, SoH accomplished a total of 12 missions at La Mascota's Children's Hospital, while training the local staff and upgrading the facilities. An SoH Nicaraguan foundation has been formed in June 2011 to ensure the sustainability of the new heart center planned and envisionned by SoH. The new Heart Center will be completed in May 2012 and will represent a new standard and vital beacon to surrounding countries for pediatric heart surgery and medical education.
Our objectives are to equip the new facility by March 2012 and to continue training local surgeons. Our program for 2012 includes five training-to-cure missions to La Mascota, costing each $50,000, and three training-only smaller missions focusing on resuscitation, echocardiography and sterilization, in order to prepare the local teams to become autonomous when the Heart Center opens.
